starting 2008 -- way behind

Saturday, February 18, 2006 I posted a plan to lose weight: weigh 190
and hiking by July 4th week 2008.

How's it been so far? Not very good. I've gained about 4 pounds!!!

So what now? Give up? No. I have learned a lot. While reviewing my
old posts, I ran across Sunday, July 02, 2006: 225. A month ahead of
schedule. How was I ahead and now I have gained it all back? I was
running 6 days a week and expending much more energy. I read lots of
places that running 6 days a week is dangerous.

I have an injury now; my right foot is very sore. I think it's the
tendons going under my heel. It has been injured for some time;
doesn't seem to heal 100%.

My desire is to run.

I am going to walk on my treadmill 6 to 7 days a week. And run at
least 4 of the days -- if my foot will allow. If my foot gets too
sore, I'll stick to walking.

Wish me luck!.

the long haul

still going -- maybe not so strong.

Sticking with low-carb diet until 4pm each day.
Trying to use this approach in a 4-day win.

Today is day 2.

I'll explain 4day win more later.

237 to 234 weight gain

I have gained weight while away at a conference entertaining clients.
I came home to find out I am up to 237. I have started low-carb,
Atkins, like eating during the day and eating regularly at night. I
am down to 234; I'm not sure it has anything to do with the way I am
eating.

I have also started using the treadmill again now that we are back
home. We moved out to an apartment for two weeks while some home
repairs were being done. Throwing the schedule out the window isn't
good on exercise.

The weather outside is cool; winter is coming.

Progress isn't being made, but I continue to fight.

decision point

Here we are.

Started in Feb/06 with a plan to lose weight. Hasn't worked.

I am at least 18 months into it and haven't really lost any weight at all.

I have learned to like exercise.
I have purchased a treadmill that I love to use.
So all is not lost.

I haven't done anything toward eating less or exercising in the last
couple of months.

I feel like I am at a decision point to get back on the horse. I need
to find motivation. I spoke with my mom over the weekend, and my
uncle is overweight, has diabetes, heart trouble, high blood
pressures, etc -- all due to being too fat. I feel like he's my
future if I don't change.

I need to change for a better life not just a slimmer waist.

More to come.

Walking with kids

Fontenelle forest one mile boardwalk is great.  It's easy enough for my 18 month old.

Trying to exercise with family and give Mom a break.

beginning again... .to run

June 25, 2006 I was at 227 -- had lost 15 pounds.

July 14th, 2006 I had an entry saying that I had stopped losing weight.

Soon after, I started to gain again.

I am back at 234, which is about where I started on this program
almost 2 years ago.

I have a choice to make -- stop and remain fat and get fatter OR rebound.

I pick rebound.

I just listened to a book called "4 day Win", and it made a lot of sense.

For the next 4 days, I am going to do 10 x 1min run/1min walk. Today
was the first day, and it went well. I took out the boys in the
double stroller. The 4 days will be up after Wednesday run -- so on
Thursday, I will reward myself with a new T-shirt.

all time low

I haven't exercised in two weeks.  We are adopting to little boys, and my schedule is shot.  I am at risk of completely falling off the wagon.

walking again

It's been a long winter. I came out of winter at the same weight I
entered. I am not very pleased with my progress, but it could be
worse.

I am still at 235 this morning. I have been at about 235 since last
August. I got down to 225 during July, but I backed off on exercise.
I am walking at least an hour per day now, and it seems to be working.
I have lost about 2 pounds in the past two weeks. I will keep
walking.

I also went to the bio-mechanic lab at the University of Nebraska at
Omaha. I'll post the results when I get the report. The test
consisted of range of motion measurements, flexibility test and video
of a 2 min walk and a 2 min run.

I must keep the faith that daily exercise will work. I want to run,
but if I try running, it becomes hard enough that I don't want to keep
it up. I run a little in the middle of my walks, but I make sure to
get in a hour, so if need to stop running in order to reach a hour, I
do.

is winter coming to an end?

Only got 3 times in this week. I am trying to just get through the
winter. This week's forcast looks better. I hope to get some time in
running this week.

Two weeks ago I did get a long run/walk in. I did more walking than
running, but a friend and I went 7 miles to a Y, 30 min's on a
treadmill and 7 miles back to the hotel. I went well considering.

Hope to buy a treadmill soon.

The main goal for all this activity has been weight loss, and it is
not really happening. I am in better shape, and I feel much better,
and I am hooked on exercising, but I haven't lost more than a pound or
two in 12 months!

I still have hope.

eat less - what about cravings

If I am always craving food, it is hard not to eat way too much food.
>From what I can read on the web, I am either psychologically
influenced to eat or physically influenced.

I decided to work on the physical first. I have started taking a
daily vitamin. I have heard that calcium is helpful, so I have added
extra calcium.

The first few days seem to be helping. Let's see what more time brings.

7 hours this week and shoes

I got 7 hours of exercise in this week. I have been only walking. I
need new shoes, and I don't have the money right now. The shoes I am
wearing fit correctly until I start to exercise for over an hour. My
second toe is longer than my big toe, and this longer toe must be
hitting the end of the shoe. My toe nail is blue, and on my left
foot, it has fallen off. I also have blood blister on the outside of
my big toe -- both feet, but the left foot is worse.

I am currently wearing Brooks Beast, but I am going to switch to
Reebok. The lady as the shoe store showed me that the Reebok shoe has
a bigger toe box than Brooks. I let you know how it works out.

While the weather has been cold and snow has been on the ground, I
have been going to the YMCA. I have liked it so much that I am going
to look for a treadmill. I don't know anything about treadmills yet,
so I will need to do a little research.

winter months

I joined the Y, and I have been walking about 4 to 6 hours per week.  I tend to get in at least 4 days per week. I would like to get more, but it isn't easy with my schedule.  We have had snow or ice on the ground for a few weeks now, so playing outside isn't easy.

is this going to work?

Running to get thin is taking much longer than I expected. When I
read information on running, it is usually about how many pounds you
will lose if you run. The trouble behind these statements is that you
tend to eat more when you start exercising. It is so easy to eat way
more calories than what is burned during exercise.

I hope to make it to my destination of weight lose, and if I do, I
want to show others that it is possible.

A lot of the successful people in the running world were athletes in
high school; I was not. I am overweight and out of shape. It's my
turn to change, and I want to bring others with me.

still running

It has been too long since my last post -- technical trouble and laziness.

I have lagged in motivation during November and December. I am back
now. I am reading more and more of Jeff Galloway's material. He's
great.

I also just finished Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes -- outstanding
book and very funny also.

While the main purpose of my running is to lose weight, I have the
following goal at present for my running:

Goal of 35 miles per week.

At my level of fitness, I need activity as much as miles.

At 13.5 min/mile, 35 miles would equal 7.875 hours.

My current long-run-goal is 7 miles, so that would take 1.575 hours --
leaving 6.3 for the rest of the week.

Run/walking 4 days a week leaves 3 days (one day taken for the
long-run) to get in the 6.3.

One of the 3 days needs to be a light day.

Here's an example (21 miles spent run/walking, so the other 14 must
come from walking or other activities. 14 miles equivalent to 3.75
hours - waking at 16min/mile)

Monday -- medium day run/walk ( 5 miles/ 67.5 min)
Tues - light run/walk ( 3 miles/ 40.5 min)
Wed -- 5.62 miles/ 1.5 hours walk
Thurs -- heavy run/walk ( 6 miles/ 81 min)
Fri -- 5.62 miles/ 1.5 hour walk
Sat -- long-run run/walk (7 miles/ 1.575 hours)
Sun - 2.8 miles/ 45 min walk

This totals 35.04.

Every 2nd week backs down to 28.03 miles (20% less) and 4th week backs
down to 17.52 miles (50%)

As the long-run-goal increases the over all goal of 35 will increase,
but the other runs will not increase by much.
